Of course the tarp remains.

It's bad enough having his name removed (how embarrassing!). But trumpsters probably don't want visitors to see the remaining damage to the marble, damage that is going to be expensive to rectify. Not to suggest that he will pay any of that cost, either . . .

because there is so much liability associated w scaffolding, it’s very, very expensive to rent.
putting it up at all was unnecessary. running it up high enough to hang that tarp (which is prolly not cheap either), also unnecessary.
now it’s gonna sit there for how long? 🙄🙄🙄

It's obvious by its design that it was specially made for the occasion, and most likely cost a hefty sum. It may be another reason it took so long to get the removal in progress - waiting for the tarp's fabrication. Hey. what's a few hundred thousand $$ expense to the taxpayers when it can save chump from further butt hurt? It's only (our) money, after all.

So, how long does it remain in place, and what becomes of it later?

Today would be a great day to start the Epstein slideshow!
