That's why the winning message is always about the economy. It's always about jobs. If we have a good economy and strong employment numbers everything most everything else takes care of itself. A campaign on foreign policy is a non-starter, as is a campaign on civil rights. If people can't make their house payment or they are struggling with other bills, they aren't going to give a fuck about helping another country and the aren't going to care about civil rights. If we want to win the midterms we need to stay on message about the economy.
