NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani renews call for banning Central Park carriage horses after horse dies in park

NEW YORK — Mayor Zohran Mamdani reiterated his support for a ban on carriage horses in Central Park on Wednesday, just hours after a horse collapsed and died in the park at West 72nd Street and West Drive on Tuesday evening — and as a bill on the controversial issue heads back to the City Council.

"I know that many New Yorkers were disturbed by what they saw yesterday, and I'm one of them," Mamdani said at an unrelated press conference Wednesday morning.

"I support removing horse carriages from Central Park," he said. "I've also said that I look forward to working with union partners and community leaders to actually deliver on that."

The mayor added he wants to "figure out a way" to ban the horse-drawn carriages — but didn't offer specifics.

to ban the horse drawn carriages. Those horses suffer and this has been a long time coming. Mamdani is right. Ban them now.

It was 9th or 11th Ave up in rhe 40s on the way to the stable, which is a building w no yard. I oppose them unless they can offer them pasture time and have them stable in the park itself somewhere. I hope they can retire in the country somewhere.

The owners see these animals as just a money making venture. Once they don't have that, they will not have need for the animals, much less want the expenses of taking care of them.

I certainly support banning the carriages, but there's not always a rosy ending as some people like to believe.

And anyone who abuses an animal will do the same to a person.

Time to move on and end the barbarism.
