Krugman: "America can afford to keep paying full (Social Security) benefits. But will we?

https://paulkrugman.substack.com/p/social-security-is-facing-a-political

Whatever you may have heard, Social Security isn’t in danger of going bankrupt. . .

Yet the current administration and Republican party are such extremists that there is a real risk that Social Security will be held hostage on behalf of their goals. If this should come to pass, the hostage-takers will claim that shoring up Social Security is unaffordable. Right on cue, Mike Johnson, the Trump-sycophant Speaker of the House, declared on Monday that “entitlement programs” like Social Security “have to be adjusted and fixed,” and that Republicans will introduce a plan to that effect next year.

But this is a ploy, because while the cost of maintaining Social Security benefits at their promised level isn’t trivial, it is in fact affordable. . . .

Is Social Security in trouble? Yes, but only because of the way its financing is currently structured — a structure that no longer works well because our society and economy have become so unequal. Moreover, Trump’s immigration policies are further endangering its already deteriorating financial condition.

So don’t believe Republicans’ gaslighting that it will be necessary to cut Social Security benefits. All that is necessary to preserve Social Security is political will to raise taxes on the wealthy and a sensible immigration policy

2. Exactly. This and the Supreme Court are driving my midterm voting strategy.

Both are HUGE issues. I always vote Democratic anyway, but I'm watching each candidate like a hawk on these two issues in particular. I heard Jeffries say just yesterday that Supreme Court reform (major reform, he said) was absolutely necessary.

The "libertarians" of the Cato Institute literally made that shit up in the early 1980s by exploiting the most pessimistic scenario of three promoted by the SS commission back then, in order to create generational warfare between the baby boomers and the older generations. It didn't work then, and it won't work now.

If it were really going "insolvent," Congress would have done something about it. Any shortfall in the "trust fund" can be made up through the general fund. They good and well know this even if the general public doesn't.

Besides, millions of the baby boom cohort have already died. An AI search shows anywhere from 14.5 percent to 17.5 percent of the original cohort have already died. The oldest members are 80, and the youngest 61-62.

5. Exactly. It is not "insolvent" either. But massive inequality and stupid GOP immigration policy . . .

. . . are sucking money out of it. Rather than tell the truth about it, Republicans are trying to gaslight Americans into believing it's "full of fraud", "going broke," or "insolvent" and "needs reform". When a Republican says "reform", they mean "destroy".

It's bullshit.

ONLY DEMOCRATS will (once that orange lizard is gone) raise or remove the cap and enact reasonable immigration policies, such as the bill Trump himself stopped Congress from passing in 2024. He called his Congressional friends in 2024 and begged them not to vote for the bill because he wanted to run on immigration. One Republican got in front of cameras and said, "We're not gonna give Biden a win on this."

For Republicans, immigration is a POLITICAL FOOTBALL to be used to their ideological advantage (a white nationalist tool for getting rid of brown people), not an actual issue to be solved. They don't give a rat's ass about immigration or the economy. The only thing they care about is how they can use "immigration" for their political advantage and white nationalist ideals.

Let the country know, put Ds in charge of both chambers and the Ds will put together responsible legislation that will pass the House and Senate (presumably by reconciliation) and put a bill on the President's desk to ensure SS exists moving forward.
