Throughout his political career, gay state Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) has proved to be a fierce campaigner. He showed his canvassing strength yet again in his primary contest for the 11th House District seat being vacated by Congressmember Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco).
Even with the powerful former House speaker endorsing District 1 Supervisor Connie Chan to succeed her, and former tech executive Saikat Chakrabarti spending millions on his own candidacy, Wiener came out of the June 2 race in a commanding first-place finish with 41.1% as of Tuesday.
This campaign is powered by people who believe that government can, and must, take action to make people's lives better and more affordable, because that is fundamentally what it's about, and that's what this movement is about, Wiener told a packed room of his supporters and members of the media at his watch results party June 2 at his campaign headquarters on upper Market Street in San Francisco. I also want to thank my opponents for participating in the democratic process. It was a spirited primary, but in San Francisco, we would not have it any other way.
Headed into their November matchup, Wiener is seen as the frontrunner against the more progressive Chan, who garnered nearly 30% of the primary vote. But with Pelosis support of her candidacy, along with that of various local unions and progressive groups, Chan struck a confident stance of her own chances to win the House seat on election night last week.
