CA-GOV: LGBTQs rally around Becerra for CA gov

With former state attorney general Xavier Becerra the lone Democratic gubernatorial candidate to make the November 3 ballot, LGBTQ leaders are rallying around his candidacy. Due to the California electorate’s overwhelming tilt to the Democrats, Becerra all but has a lock on becoming the Golden State’s 41st governor come 2027.

The former health and human services secretary in the Biden administration, Becerra took first place in the June 2 primary with almost 28% of the vote. He is expected to easily defeat in the fall his Republican opponent, Steve Hilton, who secured the second spot in the general election with 25% of the primary vote.

He edged out wealthy progressive Democrat Tom Steyer, who landed in third place with 22.5% in the primary, according to the unofficial returns as of Wednesday. In conceding the race after the latest vote count update on June 9, Steyer endorsed Becerra to succeed termed out Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom.

“Donald Trump is the embodiment of the corporations’ craven, soulless, profit-first model of politics, and it is absolutely essential that his handpicked candidate does not hold the keys to California. It would be a travesty for Steve Hilton to win the governorship, and Californians must unite behind Xavier Becerra to ensure he does not,” stated Steyer.
