House Dems threaten to target WinRed as GOP probes ActBlue

House Democrats are ratcheting up their threats to investigate the top GOP campaign fundraising platform in response to congressional Republicans’ escalating probe of ActBlue, Democrats’ own fundraising platform.

Top Democrats on the House Administration, Judiciary and Oversight committees fired off a letter Wednesday demanding WinRed CEO Ryan Lyk sit for a transcribed interview and requesting the conservative payment processor preserve documents and communications about its fraud prevention policies amid concerns over “evidence that WinRed may be processing illegal contributions from foreign sources.” The missive builds on other Democratic efforts to turn the screws on WinRed in response to Republicans’ attacks on ActBlue, with Democrats citing reports calling into question overseas donations to President Donald Trump’s campaigns among other issues.

“Republicans won’t investigate the clear pattern of fraud and criminality on WinRed precisely because the fraud benefits Donald Trump,” Rep. Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.), the ranking member on House Administration, said Wednesday.

“When there is clear evidence of fraud, deceptive fundraising methods or potential foreign contributions in American elections, Congress has a duty to investigate. House Republicans have not taken that duty seriously,” Morelle said. “But next year, rest assured, committee Democrats will.”
