I was taking garbage out the other day after sunset and just kind of stared at them for a while. A neighbor thought I was watching him in his driveway and asked what was up. I pointed and told him. He thought those were planes. Nah, they're planets. His response, "You can see planets from here?!"

I don't know why that's so funny.

We were looking at Venus one evening and our neighbor came out because she thought we were trying to look into her house.

We still laugh about it today.

We live in a semi-rural valley with a vineyard next door. The vineyard is past the street lights, so you can get some excellent darkish sky for a suburb. I started going out there in the middle of the night to do amateur astronomy things on a little blacktopped area for vehicles that's a few dozen yards from the main road. Well, the rich people gated community's security guard stationed across the street had seen me bopping in and out on foot at night on several occasions and finally came out one night with a buddy.

They thought I was lurking around to snatch grapes in dark.

I just showed them some images and things and explained and they were chill about it. But you could tell they were so confused that astronomy was a thing that people did at night. Now I just wave in their general direction whenever I go out.
