On June 8, 1967, at least 34 US sailors were killed and 171 others were wounded in an Israeli attack on the USS Liberty, a United States Navy technical research ship stationed in the Mediterranean Sea off Egypts Sinai Peninsula.
Israel claimed it was a case of mistaken identity, saying its naval forces thought the vessel was Egyptian. But some of the survivors and researchers have disputed the Israeli version of the incident. They lament that successive governments did little to bring out the truth behind one of the deadliest attacks on the US Navy by its closest ally, Israel.
This year, the attack has come under renewed attention after US Representative Thomas Massie announced he would deliver a speech on the floor of the House of Representatives to honour and memorialise the crew of the USS Liberty.
So what do we know about one of the most controversial chapters of the US Navy?

Officially, a mistake.
Unofficially, someone wanted the USA to think someone sank* their spy ship.
*Someone mustve been surprised the Liberty didnt sink.

There's Only Commissioned US Navy Ship That's Currently Being Held Captive By Another Country

The USS Pueblo (AGER-2) was taken by the enemy during a time when the US military was deeply involved in the Vietnam War. The United States, hesitant to become involved in yet another conflict, left the crew to grapple with the consequences. They endured a challenging 11 months in captivity, facing harsh treatment at the hands of the North Koreans, but ultimately succeeded in securing their return home. Unfortunately, the ship remains in captivity to this day.

For some reason, when he visited North Korea, instead of demanding the ship's release, the idiot "pee-resident" Donald J Trump saluted the bastards holding her:

(151,859 posts)working as a Russian language linguist and analyst, and stationed at a tiny little base on the Black Sea in Turkey. The Liberty had relevance to the mission I worked on, as well. Somewhat later, the Pueblo was captured. I have even less information about that, even though it was also relevant.
More than that I cannot say. Both were very bad days, though.
I was contacted several years later by someone in Israel, who "had questions for me about the Liberty." What he got, instead, was me reporting to another agency about the contact. I never heard any more from anyone about that.
I know very little of the details of any of the Liberty story, other than what was reported. I did not have a "need to know" so I did not get information.

(29,285 posts)My mother, a Jewish Zionist who once was a Marine, was very upset. She 100% blamed Israel and from that day on I believe she was very suspicious of Israel.
She visited Israel in the 70's and loved her trip, but she always held them responsible for the Liberty and stopped her regular donations on June 8, 1967.
