A day that will live in infamy.
It was the last step in certifying the next president of the United States. Trump was desperate. He had tried every maneuver he could to stop the election from going forward. He had coordinated state GOP leaders to create their own electors to go to Washington, contrary to the rules of the election. They signed their names illegitimately to a form declaring Donald Trump as the winner of their states, even though he had lost.
He planned ahead for the moment. He invited the most violent supporters he could find to come to Washington to "stop the steal". He told them to be there on January 6th. He said it would be "wild".
They heeded his call by the tens of thousands.
They set up a speech schedule just prior to the official certification of Joe Biden as the next President. Donald Trump was the last speaker before the Congress gathered to certify the vote. He told them that they would not have a country if they did not "fight like hell". He told them he would meet them at the Capitol.
The mob then marched to the Capitol. Trump returned to the White House. It turned violent rather quickly and was out of the control of the Capitol Police to contain it. They swarmed the Capitol and assaulted the cops and anyone that got in their way. They ransacked the offices and destroyed property as they threatened to hang Mike Pence and threatened Nancy Pelosi as they searched for prisoners they could capture, or perhaps kill, as the rampage continued.
Trump refused all requests to tell them to stop. He sat by the TV and watched all the violence against our government and did nothing. He enjoyed the fact that they were doing it for him.
Only after VP Pence had called in the National Guard to help did Trump tell his storm troopers to go home. Only after he saw that it was going to fail did he call for them to stop.
He was still the President at that time. It was his FBI. It was his DOJ. It was his responsibility and he failed. He betrayed our country.
The truth must be defended.
James Comey had been long gone from the FBI, fired by Trump. Joe Biden had not yet been sworn into office. Merrick Garland was not the Attorney General. Donald Trump was the person in charge of everything.

(115,801 posts)...he refused to attend the swearing in of Biden as the next president.
He was on his way to Mar-a-Lago.
As he was leaving, he took boxes and boxes of national secrets with him and refused to return them.
They had to raid his home to retrieve them. He acted as if they all belonged to him. Much like he acts as if the White House is his residence to do with as he wishes.
Will it ever end?
