It happened at around 8:38 local time, or about 40 minutes ago. Tsunami alerts have been issued for the entire Japanese Pacific coast up through Ibaraki Prefecture in SE Honshu

(985 posts)I experienced a few strong aftershocks in the aftermath on the 2011 Japan megaquake, and I was pretty rattled. This western Pacific Rim has seen a lot of major seismic activity recently

(1,279 posts)The depth may keep the tsunamis from becoming a big problem plus the energy waves may not be focused enough in one direction.
ABC: The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said tsunami waves up to 3 meters (10 feet) were possible on some coasts of the Philippines. Waves up to 1 meter (3 feet) were possible on some coasts of Indonesia and Malaysia.
Smaller tsunami waves were possible in Taiwan, Japan, Guam, Papua New Guinea and several island nations and territories in the western Pacific.

(29,930 posts)im getting various magnitude earthquake ratings . usgs lists it as a 7.2. others are shoing 8.1 - 8.2 and so fourth. the sensors must have been well overloaded.

(29,930 posts)i just saw that revision as i signed off. still a big jolt i lived 50 mi from a mag 7 in la (1971 sylmar) interisting bugguy ride.

(13,781 posts)Living in Hollywood area. It hit at like 5am. I woke up to find a safe place and was thrown directly back in bed. Huge aftershocks all day and night.
I cant imagine a 7.8!

(11,205 posts)Cousin-in-law is a teacher, and he said they were fortunately all outside at the time for a flag ceremony, so all the kids were safe.
