Pope Leo attended iconic 'Bozo's Circus' at WGN-TV as a child, brother reveals

Long before he became Pope Leo XIV, he was just a Chicago kid with a front-row seat to one of TV’s most iconic shows, according to his brother.

John Prevost shared a fun piece of family history: Leo once appeared on WGN-TV’s “Bozo’s Circus.”

“Tickets were hard to get,” Prevost told EWTN News. “But one of the guys who was in the WGN band taught music to the kids at my dad’s school — (Dad) was superintendent of schools … so he said, ‘If your kids ever want to go …'”

The Prevost brothers didn’t hesitate.

“We jumped at the chance,” John Prevost said, noting they even managed to go without missing school, since it was during a holiday.

And, this was the Bob Bell version of Bozo. Best Bozo EVER. He had the best ad libs, and they were often meant only for the parents in the audience. Mr. Bell could mock the shit out of Trump to his face, and Trump would be one of the few who would be oblivious to the mockery. He was that subtle in his humor. I really wish MeTV or one of the other rerun channels would replay that show.

The message was something like, "If you're going to elect a clown to be president, why not elect a real one."

Also, the Simpsons Dan Castellaneta (Oak Park, IL native) based Krusty the Clown on the Chicago Bozo's Bob Bell, a chain smoker.

just to watch Bozo. The cast were hilarious when they went off-script. There was lots of humor that was over the heads of the intended audience, but high schoolers caught onto it.

Thinking I might have seen the future Pope, as well...

their children were born. The story was that there was about a seven-year waiting list.

I babysat for kids whose family had the tickets. The kids got the chicken pox and could not go. They gave the tickets to other friends.

My mom got tickets for my sister and I and we went when we were ~ 6 and 8 y.o. While we were in line waiting to get in, a man approached my mother and asked her if my sister and I would like to participate in one of the on-stage games they had each day, and so we participated, and both won Monopoly games, which I still own!
Wonder if the Pope was there that day.....

When a clown [Donald Trump] moves into a palace, he doesn't become a king. The palace becomes a circus.

Grew up on the Michigan side of Lake Michigan, where we received WGN, the Cubs and Bozo.

It was live TV. One day, around 1967, I remember one kid, pretty sure it wasn't Pope Leo, who was asked if he wanted to be on the "Grand Prize Game" and replied:

"Cram it, Clownie!"

They didn't select him, but his statement went viral. Everybody in 5th grade was talking about it and repeating it. Everybody.
