Pentagon Disturbed as Its Fleet of Drones Is Left Bobbing in the Ocean When Elon Musk's Starlink Fails

Two dozen unmanned surface vessels — autonomous boat drones, basically — were left floating in the Pacific ocean after a massive outage of SpaceX’s Starlink internet service left them adrift. That event, first reported by Reuters, left the experimental robots disconnected and bobbing in the ocean for nearly an hour off the coast of California.

It was one of several Pentagon experiments disrupted by the Starlink blackout, according to Reuters. That global outage left millions of Starlink customers in the dark back in August of 2025, dealing a blow to the company’s image as an always-on satellite internet provider. While service was eventually restored, the incident left customers frustrated and analysts concerned.

According to the company website, Starlink offers “high-speed, low-latency internet with more than 99.9 percent average uptime and reliable connectivity around the globe.”

That remaining 0.1 percent clearly represents a lingering pain point, though. Pentagon officials, who are increasingly leveraging Elon Musk’s pet internet company to run its massive drone program, previously voiced issues with Starlink reliability. Per Reuters, a similar drone test in April of 2025 suffered from spotty network connections, as Starlink struggled to handle the Navy’s demanding data use.

Won't the cabinet level types, but the rest of the military should be terrified that musk and his satellites are beholden to Putin

it seems that lots of "upper-crust" players are jockeying for supremacy. There will be blood.

… convinced* enough people that outsourcing was cheaper, and cheaper is good.

The military gets a lot of crap for having things that are so expensive**, but sometimes the expense is due to redundancy and getting that extra .89999% uptime, and not anyone getting swindled. “The West Wing” had a scene that talked about this…

*and/or bribed/promised future hiring
**though there is no argument from me that it’s too damn big compared to domestic spending, but that’s another topic…

all about the grift, kickbacks, and campaign contributions.

AFAIK just about all privatization/outsourcing results in worse performance at higher cost. But, the government gets weakened and the right people make money, so...winning!

...well....I was going to say they would be outraged.... but: 1) most Americans don't seem to care or, 2) when they give the appearance of "caring," it is: a) about all the wrong things or b) about fictious issues, or c) both.

In literally every business venture that man has ever had its been a grift from the start and they think Starlink is different?

Is what we are paying Musk in military contract. That seems like it should be enough to assure Musk doesn't allow our enemies to load something into the core network that shuts it all down.

like. They’ve forced everyone with a functioning brain cell out of the Pentagon by now, thanks to Kegsbreath.

The regime is made up of nothing but incompetents, and the consequences of their AI use will be much, much worse than a bunch of expensive drones going for a swim.
