(5,224 posts)Families of US military personnel deployed near Iran are raising alarms over severe food rationing aboard naval warships. Photographs from vessels like the USS Tripoli reveal nearly empty dinner trays featuring small portions of shredded meat, folded tortillas, and processed food.
While relatives attempt to send supplies to the Middle East, a sudden halt in postal services has left critical care packages stranded. The ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran has put an indefinite pause on mail delivery to 27 military ZIP codes, cutting off what is essentially a vital lifeline.

(1,126 posts)Hubby and I used to send care packages in 2004 thru 2009. We would go to anysoldier.com and pick a unit, usually a marine unit.
Different units would post what they really needed. Personal supplies were always needed especially for the females in the unit. The request for food like pouched tuna, energy bars, dried fruit and powder milk were also on the lists. Art supplies and stationary were also asked for a lot.

(1,126 posts)My point was the military has never been very good at taken care of our troops.
Edited to add: the postal service has never been responsible for military mail durring conflicts overseas. The military handles it themselves. The postal service only handles it stateside. All mail on the wrst cost is sent to an FPO in San Francisco and the military takes it from there. The east coast has a similar address. So it is still the military failing our troops.

The September 2025 spending spree reportedly went well beyond furniture. The military spent $2 million on Alaskan king crab; $15.1 million on ribeye steak; $1 million on salmon; $124,000 on ice cream machines; $26,000 on sushi preparation tables; and $139,224 on 272 orders of donuts, per Open The Books.

The Pentagon also spent $98,329 on a Steinway & Sons grand piano for Air Force chief of staff's home, $26,000 on a violin and $21,750 for a custom-made flute from a luxury Japanese brand. There could also be many new footrests at the Pentagon, since the military spent $111,497 in that category.
Many of the goods purchased were made outside the U.S. The Pentagon spent a record $6.6 billion on purchases from foreign governments and foreign-owned businesses in September 2025, breaking a record set in September 2023, according to Open The Books.

DEFUND THE PENTAGON over abuse of spending. Feed our soldiers not Pete and the elite.

(1,126 posts)Not the post office. All packages and letters sent to troops while serving overseas in conflict or war go through the military. I have sent mail and packages to family and units since the Vietnam war. On the west coast (where I live) all mail is sent to a FPO address in San Francisco , the east coast has a different address. From there the Military handles it.
So if troops are not getting mail and care packages from home it's the militaries fault not the postal service. I haven't sent a package since 2009 but I don't think that has changed.

(1,126 posts)The postal service only handles military mail inside the US which goes to a FPO for the west coast (San Francisco) or an APO for the east coast, the military handles it from there. Security is the biggest reason for this.
It would be the military suspending mail service not the post office.
I don't doubt that food supplies are low, that is not a new thing when it comes to deployment in a war. The military has never been great at getting supplies where needed.
I take issue blaming it on the US postal service. Claiming they have stopped mail to certain zip codes. The US Postal Service does not handle Military mail.

(166 posts)at the behest of Vladimir Putin. That is the problem with everything right now. Trump has been installed just like Victor Yanukovich was installed in Ukraine and Orban in Hungary.
We are being eaten from the inside out.
Making things worse is AIPAC and its ilk merging with neocon evangelicals.
The issues are deep, are myriad.

(180,686 posts)This is what happens when you have an incompetent fool with no experience in charge of the Pentagon. Pete likes to put on makeup and appear on camera, boasting about war and its warriors, while essential tasks, like making sure those warriors are fed, are not seen as flashy enough to bother with.

RIGHT: What Donald is giving folks at Mar-a-Lago to eat.
Honestly, I thought I was going to make this point a lot better than I can. The food at Mar-a-Lago may be richer and more plentiful, but it still looks like poorly-plated slop.
