An elderly man and his hound dog drown while hunting a raccoon. For a while the man doesn't realize he's dead, then he and his faithful dog walk along a country lane to the afterlife. He is almost lured into what purports to be heaven, but he refuses to enter when the gatekeeper won't allow his dog. He keeps walking, and comes to the real heaven, which of course gladly welcomes our canine companions.

Dogs sometimes have better sense than humans, perceiving evil when people might be deceived. This is one of the reasons there is no dog in the current White House.
