"I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I've made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegation made against me. However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make.
am aware of efforts to bring an immediate expulsion vote against me and other nembers. Expelling anyone in Congress without due process, within days of an allegation being made, is wrong. But it's also wrong for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties. Therefore, I plan to resign my seat in Congress.
I will work with my staff in the coming days to ensure they are able, in my absence, to serve the needs of the good people of the 14th congressional district."

Yes, Swalwell should resign from Congress. I held out hope that the allegations were not true, but here we are and he must face the consequences.
Now, can we see the same level of anger and outrage directed toward Trump? Of course not. There are two sets of standards, one for Democrats and one for Republicans.

(16,820 posts)He's guilty and needs to go. It's a shame though. He had so much promise. I hope he gets the help he obviously needs.

(1,871 posts)He had such promise, and he threw it all away.
And apparently, he victimized several women along the way. Such a terrible story all the way around.

(8,286 posts)So is Swalwell.
If anyone has sympathy for him or anyone like him, just think about your young daughters. What would you want to happen if her boss sent her dikk pics?
Bye! Furthermore, we don't need this kind of distraction. We can't ask for accountability for the Epstein class and excuse his behavior. He needed to go.

Makes me wonder how many other Congress critters are sitting on potentially embarrassing, or illegal, actions.
Trump must be snickering.

So disappointed in the guy.

(23,139 posts)They get a lot more attention from women and they see that other men are stepping out on their wives. So they say- what the heck, she'll never find out. In his mind its inconsequential- even if she works for him. Even if they are both drunk.
But eventually the chickens come home to roost.

(39 posts)I mean most men are idiots on this stuff but in this day and age a man of ambition HAS to realize that if your going after power that high you MUST enter the priesthood. Even if you don't think you have to ANY off road activities make you an easy target. I thought Clinton and #MeToo had moved us forward but you can just see there's some real disorder out there. Reminds me of Spitzer...guys who have no real friends or no REAL friends who keep them grounded. Swallwell was living with some billionaire for some time and just started living the life before he had the prize. How was THAT allowed to go on with NOBODY in the know. Pelosi? The Sanchez sisters. How early was Schiff aware of this? DEMS gotta tighten up... 2026 to 2032 are going to require total situational awareness!

(39 posts)As Governor of Cali... You have endless power and prestige. Why would you mess with the ONLY women you are not allowed to mess with?
But seriously... DEMS have a "savior complex" that leads them into "people don't understand da PRESSURE a man of my status undergoes"... there is a sense of "relieve me of my grand suffering!" that Repubs just don't entertain.

(39 posts)...if they're going to go there. Other guys will set them up. Wasn't there a Bush brother who would get on a private jet and there was always a woman already on it? Or they'll sign an NDA. DEMS are always in "no one understands what I ENDURE!" mode and it's always some 25 year old who has to catch an UBER ride home!

(1,878 posts)Its not easy to tell when someone is being ratfucked and railroaded, or if they actually did something wrong.
On top of that, we see these ethics rules unfairly and arbitrarily enforced. In this situation one from each side is resigning (both Swalwell and Gonzales from the GOP side) are resigning.
MustLoveBeagles
(16,820 posts)The rules applied equally for a change.

(39 posts)... but then I remembered that we are the party of Anthony Weiner! If HE could get in that much trouble just from having an internet connection & damn near doom Hillary's campaign office singlehandedly then we DEMOCRATS must realize that the REPUBLICANS have us beat on "nondisclosure issues".

(24,701 posts)An example:
During the Republican National Convention in July 2016, President Trump and his campaign worked to change the national platform to make their policies more pro-Russian and less pro-Ukraine. In the platform, they decided to no longer call for giving weapons to individuals fighting the Russians in Ukraine. This was in contrast to the position of other Republican leaders. Not only did they not include it in the platform, they also went behind the scenes to shut down delegate amendments calling for tougher Russian sanctions and aid for the Ukrainian military. Therefore, the platform passed at the hands of the Trump campaign was completely at odds with many other Republicans' stance on Russia, which should be a signal unto itself.

Watched him go from zero to hero and now to lech.
The open secret I never read about him, that is an important story.
In the meantime, let's hope the victims receive the support they need. These situations are disgusting.
