My grandmother emigrated from Hungary

Her family arrived here in the early 1900's and lived in a makeshift house made of sod when they first arrived. They had nothing. But they still preferred it here. And although she worked as a maid and never graduated from high school, she lived to own her own home and reap the benefits of FDR's safety net. She never took Social Security or Medicare for granted. She was smart, battle tested, and practical. She didn't blame others for her problems.

Today I can't help but feel that she would be proud of her former compatriots. Congratulations, Hungary!

Some how I managed to make it to a family reunion there. I stayed in Budapest.

Across the river from Budapest is another segment of Hungary that had a lot of awful graffiti on the buildings. It was as if something had gone very wrong there.

I found out later that is was a concentration camp during WWII.

OMG!

I am glad your grandmother managed to get out of there!

I really liked Hungary a lot!

Great people and a great place!

while her mother, who'd already emigrated, was visiting family.

I visited Budapest last month, and want to go back. The next time I'm going to spend some time at the Family History Center, connected to the Dohany Street Synagogue.

.and sister escaped end of WII and came to the States after a year waiting in London.
I spoke Hungarian until I was 4-5 yo or so.

I think often how grateful I am my parents didn’t live to see what happened to this country they fought so hard to come to. But now, I wish they could see today in Hungary, with blinders so still not to see the USA !

I have no excuse, especially since I actually paused and thought about which word was correct. Obviously, some wires were crossed somewhere! Anyway, welcome to DU!
