(23,463 posts)Registration is current law, but selection and induction, including funds for the staff for draft boards , etc, is not.
Reactivating the draft is as lethal a third rail as eliminating social security, maybe more lethal, because it affects young voters.

(23,463 posts)This isnt the TSA, they arent going to work for free- they havent even been hired yet.
Reactivating the draft would mean the end of the Trump administration.
If they need troops for their war, they will just stop-loss them, just like Bush did in Iraq and Afghanistan.

(23,463 posts)Despite acting with lawless impunity, this administration faces the limitations of the real world.
If they didnt need money to do anything, and could just will it into existence without congress allocating funds, they wouldnt be asking billions for this war.
There will be no draft.
LearnedHand
(5,531 posts)No need to be insulting.

(23,463 posts)And how programs are funded.
Claiming Trump will successfully skirt the law to create and fund the selective service system and that He will just do it is a lazy, flippant quip that ignores all the times in the past year that he has been stopped from just doing it.

(76,977 posts)In fact, the USPS has been an independent, self-funded organization since 1970.
They don't rely on Congress for budgets.
There is no comparison to be made between selective service & USPS.

(130,842 posts)seems to add more weight to the whole idea of a draft. Of course, Congress would have to authorize reinstatement and that's not likely (at least for now), but this action draws focus to something that was extremely unpopular and stirred up a whole lot of resistance at the time and will surely do so again if it does happen. Might make young people pay more attention.

(151,413 posts)They are supposed to register for it, of course, and many do. Some do not, of course.
I remember like it was yesterday the time military recruiters came to my high school in 1962. All of the high school boys had to attend an assembly in the gym. There we were threatened with dire consequences if we did not register for the draft as soon as we turned 18. The penalties were detailed. We were duly warned.
Then, the assembly turned into a recruiting session, with the recruiters from the military branches telling us how great it was to be in the Army, Navy, Air Force or Marines. We got told about the buddy recruiting system.
Then, before the assembly ended, they ran the fear thing back through the room, threating non-cooperating people with serious consequences.
I was not amused. But I sure as hell registered for the draft when I turned 18, and ended up enlisting in the USAF when I was 20.
I don't expect they will use such crude methods now, though.
