That said, another concern that judges often have is the possibility of crises if they issue rulings that for one reason or another can't be enforced. The judiciary alone or even in combination with Congress has scant means of enforcement – police powers are under the executive branch; and Trump has replaced much of the executive with his own creatures.

A reasonable person could have imagined that a president like Trump would use their ruling as cover to commit any number of illegal acts. Combine that with the president's pardon power, the president can ask others to commit illegal acts and then promise them a pardon. Any fucking reasonable person should have seen this coming.

John Roberts wasn't solely responsible for that decision. The other 5 conservative justices voted in favor of it as well. Alito, Thomas, and Schlump's 3 picks (Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett) all bear part of the responsibility.

There is nothing in the Constitution about immunity. It was more important to ensure that a Democrat did not become President than to protect the country and the world from a ignorant mad man.

But the right always had a long-term plan to give more power to the executive branch. It was a major goal pushed by Bill Barr before Trump came into office. He wrote a position on the subject. That's how he was selected by Trump to serve as Attorney Genera in Trump's first term.

I'm guessing they're all having doubts about their previous opinions. But once again, it's a mess they made that we have to clean up.
