The Republican Party has been shitty ever since the “Party of Lincoln” abandoned the Black Americans in the election of 1876. They wanted to do business with the South.

By way of his hate and his position, he validated the hatred they already had. He became their hero; their god.

The ruling order of the GOP had used the rubes for years. But Cheney, Bush, Kristol, Frume etc . . . Shared very little in common with their base.

In a way, he has stolen the GOP from the politicians that thought they'd control and use the rubes for themselves forever. Now we're watching the old power slowly flee the party. The GOP really is the party of Trump. A cult of personality, low information, totally manipulated, but not necessarily traditionally conservative. More fascist, more angry, more controlled and managed than ever.
