Russia Is Big Winner as Iran War Drains Supplies That Ukraine Needs

Russia is one of the biggest winners in the early days of the largest U.S. military confrontation in decades, as Iranian missiles deplete stocks of Patriot interceptors that Ukraine needs for its defense.

Even before the Iran campaign, production bottlenecks in the U.S.-made Patriot system had drained Ukraine’s reserves and left European allies on yearslong waiting lists. Those shortfalls have allowed Russia to punch through gaps in Ukraine’s air defenses, devastating its power infrastructure and casting Ukrainian cities into blackouts.

U.S. and Gulf states have fired hundreds of interceptors in the opening days of the war to repel Iranian missile and drone barrages. Gulf states possess only days of interceptors under sustained attack, analysts estimate, potentially forcing Washington to pull from Indo-Pacific and other regional stockpiles, weakening its forward posture elsewhere.

Iran had fired more than 500 ballistic missiles and 2,000 drones since the start of the campaign, Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Wednesday. He said that the U.S. has sufficient munitions for the Iran operation.

Lockheed Martin’s entire 2025 U.S. output of its most advanced interceptor, the PAC-3, was just over 600. At least two Patriot interceptors are typically required to destroy a single ballistic missile—often followed by a third or more if the first pair fail. Production of a single, multimillion-dollar interceptor is limited and can take months, with components coming from across the U.S. and as far afield as Spain.

There are alternatives, existing and in the pipeline:

Europe rushes to start producing Patriot systems alternatives

Europe aims to produce additional air defense systems similar to the U.S. Patriot, former CIA Director Gen. David Petraeus said in an interview with NV on Feb. 16.

Petraeus addressed the prospect of expanding U.S. Patriot production, noting that Ukraine's survival depends on them and the need is estimated at over 60 interceptors per month - exceeding current capacity.

"From what I know, work is underway on additional production, and the same applies to European systems similar to the Patriot missile defense system," Petraeus said.

Air defence 'Made in Europe': Is the alternative to Patriot coming from Germany?

Germany is expanding its IRIS-T air defence system. Could the new SLM/X variant be Europe's answer to the US Patriot system?

Diehl Defence has unveiled a unified missile launcher that can fire both medium and long-range variants of Germany's IRIS-T air defence system which, according to its capabilities, could be Europe's answer to the US-made Patriot.

The German defence company presented the launcher at Enforce Tac, Germany's leading trade fair for security and defence, bringing together the IRIS-T SLM medium-range system and the IRIS-T SLX long-range system. The new launcher can fire both missile variants, even mixed within the same battery.

Missile maker MBDA says it has expertise to make Patriot launchers in Germany

BERLIN, Sept 26 (Reuters) - European missile maker MBDA could increase production capacity of Patriot air defence missiles at a new plant in Germany if orders cross "a certain threshold" and has the technical expertise to manufacture launchers for the system, the managing director of its German unit told Reuters.

Patriot, developed by U.S. defence company Raytheon, is among the most advanced air defence systems despite being in service since the 1980s.

FIRST PATRIOT PRODUCTION PLANT IN EUROPE

In 2024, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain laid the foundation for the first Patriot production plant in Europe by signing a 5.1 billion euro ($5.98 billion) contract to purchase up to 1,000 missiles from a Raytheon-MBDA joint venture.

The missiles will be manufactured at a new facility in Bavaria in southern Germany whose construction will double the global production capacity for PAC 2 missiles, which are enhanced for the interception of tactical ballistic missiles.

"We are on schedule. We are planning to start production at the end of 2026, to ensure first delivery at the beginning of 2027," Thomas Gottschild, Managing Director of MBDA Deutschland, said in an interview.

Last I heard, the 2027 deadline was achievable.
