MI-GOV: Scholten backs Benson for first congressional endorsement in Democratic race for governor

U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten (D-Grand Rapids) gave her support to Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson Monday, as Benson aims to move from the Department of State to the governor’s mansion.

In giving her support to Benson’s campaign, Scholten is the first sitting member of Congress to endorse in the Democratic race for governor, which currently includes Benson, Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson and biochemist Kevin Hogan.

“I’m proud to endorse Jocelyn Benson for Governor because she has a proven record of defending our democracy and delivering real results for Michiganders, from securing Michigan’s elections to transforming government services,” Scholten said in a statement. “At a time when too many Michiganders are feeling stretched thin, strong, steady leadership matters. Jocelyn has spent her career as a fearless public servant — from law school dean to Michigan’s Secretary of State — and she has consistently shown she can get things done. I know her leadership will help build a more affordable, fair, and opportunity-filled Michigan for everyone.”

While Scholten is the first member of Congress to give her support to Benson, the secretary of state has secured endorsements from more than 20 state lawmakers, including Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks (D-Grand Rapids).
