My nephew fell from the second story hit the lower roof and then then the fell to the driveway, The police did not think he would make it. He was airlifted to Boston.

We were lucky he made it, took a lot of time, but he survived. When he goes through airport security, he sets off the metal detectors with the metal plates in his head.

Dad talked about that when he was in Normandy in 1944. The first time he and his compadres faced concussive injuries, though they didn't know the cause at the time. The break out, Operation Cobra, was to begin with the carpet bombing of German positions in and around St. Lo. Many bombs feel short and hammered the 30th infantry division's 120th regiment, killing and injuring 600+ soldiers including General Leslie McNair. Dad said the best you could do was dive into ditch or foxhole and hope and pray. He said some guys came out of it without a scratch but were never the same afterward. Lots of cases of that mainly from shelling on their way to Germany and the boat ride home. Shell shock that doesn't go away. Perhaps ever. Now we know.

I was sitting at a red light and was rear ended. I have mentally been found, by the government, to not be able to work. Before my husband died, there were times when I could not recall his name. I struggle with my dog’s names. My taste has changed. I do not enjoy foods I used to. I had to quite teaching Chinese kids English because I could not do math problems at a k-2 level. I grieve the person I was before the accident. I have found others on the subreddit who also grieve who they were. Overnight, you have a whole new personality. I have five different types of headaches. I have double vision and do much more. It is horrible.

It would be so much easier if I had done something to cause it. A drastic change being my fault would at least, well I am not sure. Sometimes it is hard to find words with a TBI. That is what my concussion specialist says. Anyway, I was stopped at a red light. I did nothing but sit there! It is hard because everything was out of my hands. I cannot imagine what soldiers go through.

Most of us would be more upset about a dog getting hit by a car than he is about the deaths of American troops.
