A major diplomatic breakthrough was within reach before the strikes began
Just before the attacks, Omans Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi said Iran had agreed during indirect talks with the U.S. to never stockpile enriched uranium, calling it a major breakthrough. He said all remaining issues in a deal could be resolved amicably and comprehensively within a few months. A peace deal is within our reach if we just allow diplomacy the space it needs to get there, Al Busaidi said.
I wonder WHO didnt want a peace deal ?

They had stockpiles of HEU enriched far beyond any civilian use. 60%. A short cycle away from easy weapon grade--although, strictly speaking, a nuclear weapon could be designed that used 60% HEU.
While they were agreed to not do certain things, one sample from an area not to be sampled--oops--showed enrichment to weapons grade. But they said they would never do that. Somebody was lying. The UN or the Iranian government. Gee ...
They denied a weapons program--but it was hard to see their enrichment activity in any other light. Even the UN agreed. Again, somebody was lying--the UN or the Iranian government.
Yes, Trump is now spouting off about destroying the program that the Iranians said they never had but that the UN said they did, while the Iranians are upset that their non-existent program was destroyed--when Trump said he'd 'obliterated' it last summer.
Put all the evidence in one little heap, instead of putting it in boxes that say "approved" and "to be memory holed" and then putting the 'memory hole' box down the old mental garbage disposal and the result is that Iran almost certainly had a program that at the least, as multiple intel assessments asserted, put the ayatollah/peace-workers just a few months away from deployment of nuclear weapons. Could they deny wanting to make nuclear weapons? Sure.
But then again in January 2022 Russia had a massive build up of forces right next to Ukraine. But until they actually invaded Ukraine, could they deny having plans to invade? Answer: given what we knew then, yes. (Updated answer: later satellite analysis showed acres and acres of armored vehicles and massive stockpiles of munitions and fuel that were uninvolved and unnecessary in any actual military practice/drills. Why where they there? Only one reason makes sense: To be used.)
(As for hitting the US with nukes, you know, the US was hit by the Iranians today--navy HQ in Bahrain was an attack on the US, albeit one made during open hostilities so yeah, hurt, but no foul. Note that you don't have to hit the continental US to 'strike the US'. Blow up US barracks in Beirut or the Khobar Towers in Sa'udiyya, it's not like that's a strike against the Seychelles or Malta or Canada, ya know?)
