But I remember a story about how archaeologists would decide if any discovered group of human remains came from a tribe that was “civilized “.

If they found any healed femurs that had been broken a few years before the person’s death, then they were part of a civilized people. A person with a broken femur cannot do much day to day until they are healed. Therefore, the group reached a decision that it was better to accept the short term loss instead of leaving them to die.

This is the hallmark of a civilized people.
