At 9 pm, Donald J. Trump began what would become the longest State of the Union address in American history. For one hour and forty-eight minutes, he stood in front of the country and delivered a speech that was not about the state of our union at all, but about the state of his own power, and how desperate he is to hold onto it as it slips further and further out of his control. It was full of deliberate lies from start to finish, packed with racist talking points, made-up statistics, twisted grievances, and the kind of unhinged rhetoric that made clear just how afraid he is, not only that the truth about his ties to Epstein will finally come out, but that the full impact of what hes done to our economy, to our international alliances, to the rule of law, and to the basic systems that hold this country together will finally catch up to him.
And if there was still any doubt about what this night was really about, he erased it himself with this: These people are crazy. Im telling you, theyre crazy. Amazing. Were lucky we have a country. With people like this, Democrats are destroying our country, but weve stopped it just in the nick of time, didnt we? Thats what the President of the United States said tonight, into the microphone, on national television, in between demands for applause and pauses to catch his breath.
This is the golden age of America, he said, through mouth breathing, while leaning on the podium for support. And thats when the lies began. He said the economy was bad before he took office, and now it had a stunning economic turnaround, the biggest in history. And then he launched into one of the most bizarre moments of the night: People are asking me: Please, please, please, Mr. President, were winning too much. We cant take it anymore. Were not used to winning in our country. Until you came along, we were just always losing, but now were winning too much. No one is saying this. No one has ever said this. This is a man constructing a fantasy in real time and then responding to it as if it were a conversation he actually had. And the room clapped for it.
Then came the line he always circles back to, the one that slipped out again tonight without hesitation: So in my first year of the second term, it should be my third term, but strange things happen. He said it like a joke. But this isnt a joke. This is the President of the United States once again suggesting that the two-term limit doesnt apply to him. That what happened in 2020 was somehow stolen. That the rules are optional when he doesnt like the outcome. Is he saying he had no plans to leave? That he still doesnt? We cant pretend these moments dont matter. Because he keeps saying it out loud. And the danger is pretending he doesnt mean every word of it.

(52,819 posts)but from the few clips I saw afterward, it was more like a rambling campaign speech. In his first term, he actually tried to sound serious and presidential during the SOTU as he spewed his lies. Apparently last night, he just didn't give a shit. From what I saw it was anything goes, including that bizarre cartoonish voice he uses.
At the end as he walking out, he was very slow and tired looking. He looked pretty miserable (that is when I turned on the TV, as he was leaving).

(20,768 posts)There needs to be a full accounting of every goddamn thing. I will never believe he actually beat Harris.

(3,773 posts)... he made a point of thanking Eloon Musk for his expertise with vote-counting machines. 2+2 always equals 4, and I share your certainty that the election was rigged FOR trump. Harris was leading in all the swing states, but all of a sudden, those are the states where she came up short.
Der Republican Party is the party of liars, cheats, and thieves, with an occasional murderer thrown in to spice things up. Trump may not have shot someone on 5th Avenue, but I don't doubt for a second that he'd pay someone else to do it. Or to strangle a certain fellow pedophile in his cell.

(12,581 posts)There is so much voter suppression, gerrymandering, vote count rigging that it surprises me any Democratic leader is ever voted in. But they can beat even a rigged system if they keep fighting for fair voting systems.
That's one good thing about our states controlling elections. When the GOP invariably rigs the elections, they got to deal with a minimum of 50 different systems to break into. One of the reasons the GOP always rigs the presidential election is that it's only one candidate they have to adjust the numbers for.

(22,434 posts)I shudder to think how many people have died untimely deaths because of him, directly or indirectly, and how many more will follow them before it's all over.

(3,773 posts)... Manson never killed anyone, either at least, not in the Tate/LaBianca attacks, but he died in prison nevertheless. May such thoughts plague the Orange Gargoyle for the rest of his days, may they be few.
Trump is congenitally incapable of remorse or shame for his treachery, but his rage at finally NOT getting away with something will ultimately devour him.

(22,434 posts)He is incapable of shame or remorse, as you pointed out, but I think the fear of his career as a sexual predator (and who knows what else) being fully exposed is eating away at him. I hope it eats him alive.

and my cat is responsible for unpaid bills, delinquent weed whacking and painting.
Miserable Trump won't take responsibility for anything, including his own pecker.
Leaves that to others.

(2,116 posts)Were more disgusting than the man at the podium.
Gross. Disgusting boot lickers supporting a convicted criminal, rapist and likely human trafficker. There is no bottom to the depravity.
It must be repudiated in November and in every election thereafter.

(37,891 posts)That's kind of harsh!
I mean - seals are just being trained seals. Magapubs gonna magapub.
GiqueCee
(3,773 posts)... ALL trained seals are female; the males are too big easily twice the size of females and way too aggressive to ever be trained.

(3,773 posts)... fifty years ago, while taking a stroll on the beach near More Mesa, I came across the very ripe corpse of a mature male sea lion minus its head. There's only one other marine mammal that doesn't fear a big male sea lion, and that's an orca. Those guys ain't afraid of nuthin'!

Did he brag of a coal powered pentagon?
Did he even mention the historic weather events we are having and how he will rush FEMA and the resources to recover?

(12,581 posts)"The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens. When Republicans jumped to their feet and Democrats remained seated, Trump pointed at them and said, You should be ashamed of yourself. Not standing up. You should be ashamed of yourself. And the room erupted into chants of USA, USA. That was a loyalty test on national television. He wasnt asking for agreement. He was demanding submission."
And he got his submission from the clapping seals and drunk pedophile protectors surrounding him.
