Voters will go to the polls in Texas next week many have already voted early and most of the attention has been on the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate, where Jasmine Crockett and James Talarico are locked in a tight and increasingly nasty battle. But that Democratic primary isnt necessarily just a fight for the silver medal in November. Texas is a potentially winnable race for Democrats, in part because Republicans have plenty of problems of their own. In fact, the smart money is that incumbent Sen. John Cornyn will lose his job. So lets cover the Republican primary today, and well have a story about the Democrats in your inbox later this week.
After every election, political commentators come up with countless theories for why the losing party failed. Theres usually a fair amount of disagreement about the correct lesson. But for 2022, a year when Republicans actually lost a seat in the Senate despite facing an already unpopular Joe Biden, its relatively uncontroversial to say that Republicans shot themselves in the foot by nominating a bunch of less-than-stellar candidates. It wasnt the partys only problem the backlash triggered by the Supreme Courts decision to overturn Roe v. Wade also hurt the GOP but still, they lost winnable Senate races in Georgia and Pennsylvania in part because they nominated flawed candidates like Herschel Walker and Dr. Mehmet Oz.1
The Republican primary in Texas is giving strong 2022 vibes. Cornyn an establishment figure who has a close relationship with Mitch McConnell and broke with Senate Republicans by not joining lawsuits challenging the certification of 2020 election results is running against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Paxton is something of a MAGA darling and was recently endorsed by Turning Point USA, although President Trump hasnt endorsed any one candidate in the race (more on that in a bit).

(3,305 posts)Needs to get on board with winner of the Democratic primary. Period. Just my two cents. Or we will never have a chance in the general.
FWIW Crockett and Talarico are both amazing imo.
I am just a thankful New Mexican citizen born in Texas.

I've made my choice for the TX Dem primary, but will happily and whole-heartedly support either candidate... no ifs, no ands, not buts (except for the buts who yell the derpish "X can never be elected in Texas!" )

(12,739 posts)Paxton, the base favorite, leads in the polls, but he has serous baggage of adultery and corruption, causing the GOP controlled House to impeach him. The Senate failed to convict.
Dems would love to run against Paxton.

Republicans don't have any appealing candidates. Cornyn is flagging, and Paxton is mired by scandals and adultery. With all the bad feelings nationally about what is happening between the economy, immigration, 47, and more, with unappealing candidates on their side, we could get some crossover votes depending on who our candidate is coming out of the primary. If democrats show up in big numbers (this is always our problem in Texas--we don't), then Texas could be in play.
Additionally, there's all the hard work Beto has been doing in our state. Getting voters registered, still being an active and engaged presence. He might have lost his two races, but he has continued to help Texas and I believe if we do turn blue one day, it will be because of his efforts.

(13,193 posts)Was said about his opponent during Bill Maher interview. He said we are running against each other but on same side and basically believe same things. Not those exact words but what he said made it clear he would support her fully if she beats him.
