Angry Locals Force Officials to Ax Charlie Kirk Memorial

County officials in Texas pulled the plug on renaming a road to honor slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk after pushback from locals.

After Kirk, 31, was shot dead at Utah Valley University in September last year, he was immediately lionized by the right, despite his polarizing politics.

This was the case in Bastrop County in Central Texas, where a motion was tabled to designate a portion of FM 969 the “Charlie Kirk Corridor.”

The plan for the road, which is about 30 minutes east of downtown Austin, was shelved after over 100 locals showed up to voice their disapproval.

From his Wikipedia page:

Charles James Kirk was born on October 14, 1993, in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights, Illinois,[1] and raised in the nearby city of Prospect Heights.[2] His father, Robert W. Kirk, is an architect who was involved in the construction of Trump Tower.[3][4] His mother, Kathryn (née Smith),[5] is a former trader at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange who subsequently worked as a mental health counselor.[2][3][4] He had one sibling, a younger sister, Mary, who went on to become an art curator in Chicago.[6][7]

If I really wanted to dive into the sewer (and I don’t), research into who proposed this bill and initially supported it would probably reveal some interesting connections.

it was a whole different meeting when the public showed up. and, living in a conservative rual area, I was often "the public" who showed up at other board or council or town meetings... always a game changer with the good old boys. and always an education.

Austin is the city of local color music, tattoos, dogs,
trees, and speedbumps... winding roads and hills,
and lots of trees.

Bastrop is about an hour away. An old yellowdawg
Democrat friend lives on a ranch near there.

He knew LBJ and got Lloyd Doggett started in
politics.

It's not all bad here in Texas.

And I say this with the utmost respect for those amazing 100 people in Bastrop who showed the F up and got this shot down, but even just outside of Austin, it's red, red, red. Even on my street in Austin, there are a mix of Trump signs and whoever else is running at the time. Austin is blue... but it's still Texas. Super proud of Bastrop!

“Not all of us are going to agree, but we can agree to disagree,” said (Bastrop County Commissioner David) Glass. “I absolutely don’t agree with everything Charlie Kirk said.”

Take that to mean he agrees with at least some of what Kirk said and is leaving open the possibility that they might be some of the more egregious things Kirk is known for. Glass can't be straightforward, though, because MAGA idiots have a habit of shooting people who aren't MAGA enough for their tastes.

Go ahead. Do it. Horst Wessel was a thug, a street agitator, and a pimp. Kirk would be in good company.

They live in Bastrop and are sick of Kirk and Elon Musk, who barged in there and took over, very similar to what Musk did in S Texas.

I admit I am a bit confused as to why the right has lionized Kirk so much. Minimal investigation of Kirk’s actual words reveal some horrible stuff. Do they really, REALLY want to elevate this racist/bigot to martyr status? Is he the best you got??
