A Texas congressional race is in turmoil after new allegations that the Republican incumbent, Representative Tony Gonzales, had an affair with a now-deceased staffer, Regina Santos-Aviles. Gonzales has denied reports of an affair with Santos-Aviles, who died by suicide last year, accusing his political rival of politicizing her death. But calls are growing for the congressman to exit the race ahead of a March 3 primary. Here, what we know.

In an interview with the Express-News, Aviles confirmed that he learned about his wife’s affair with Gonzales last year and said that he couldn’t allow the congressman to “lie on my wife’s name.”

“Tony abused his power. He should have held himself to a higher standard as a congressional leader,” Aviles told the outlet. “I hope that Tony will stand up and be accountable for his actions.”
