Trump admin invoking Defense Production Act to boost production of glyphosate. Glyphosate producers get federal backing.

Just got this email from Environmental Working Group

This isn’t just disappointing. It’s a betrayal.

After promising to “Make America Healthy Again,” the Trump administration is invoking the Defense Production Act to boost production of glyphosate – the most widely used herbicide in the country, classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a probable human carcinogen.

The Defense Production Act is typically reserved for national emergencies and wartime needs.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. promised toxic chemicals would be scrutinized. That public health would come first. That families would be protected.

Instead, producing one of the world’s most controversial pesticides is now a national priority – strengthening chemical manufacturers while communities shoulder the risk.

Here’s what this decision makes clear:

Glyphosate producers get federal backing.

Health concerns are brushed aside.

“Make America Healthy Again” takes a back seat to corporate profits.

For years, public health advocates, independent scientists and medical experts have warned about glyphosate exposure. Communities across the country have demanded accountability.

Now, instead of precaution, we’re seeing protection – for the industry.

As EWG President and co-Founder Ken Cook said, “By granting immunity to the makers of the nation’s most widely used pesticide, President Trump just gave Bayer a license to poison people. Full stop.”

If you believe public health should come before pesticide industry profits, make your voice heard.

Did the administration just betray its “Make America Healthy Again” promise by boosting glyphosate production?

… RFK Jr’s MAHA disciples were fuming today after the Trump admin announced that it was ramping up production of glyphosate. NYT: “Trump issued an executive order late Wed aimed at spurring the domestic production of glyphosate, a widely used weedkiller that has figured in health lawsuits. The move immediately set off alarms among supporters of RFK Jr.’s ‘Make America Healthy Again’ movement.”

… “Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, which has been the target of tens of thousands of lawsuits that claim it causes non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In 2018, as a plaintiff’s lawyer, Kennedy helped win a landmark $289 million jury verdict against Monsanto, the maker of Roundup, in a case contending the company knew the weedkiller caused cancer. But in a statement issued through a spokesman, the health secretary said he supported the president.”

… Vani Hari, a healthy eating advocate and supporter of Kennedy’s nutrition agenda: “MAHA voters were promised health reform, not chemical entrenchment. This is a direct assault on MAHA and a gift to pesticide and chemical industry lobbies at the expense of human health.”

for years and used a lot RoundUp until I read how toxic it was found to be for users. I stopped but too too late,
I was diagnosed with Large B Cell Lymphoma in 2020, underwent Chemo and seemly was on my way to remission when in 2024 I contracted a secondary lymphoma-FLL which has no cure but with treatment is controllable.
It’s glyphosate. Distructive, cancerous glyphosate.

There are so many things that we were told were "safe" only to learn that they had devastating consequences. I liken this to MY generations' worship of the sun and tanned skin - now so many of us dealing with precancerous and cancerous skin issues.

I wish you all the very best.

The “Make America Healthy Again” agenda is riddled with a series of overlapping contradictions, which are becoming even more common.

When RFK Jr. was on the campaign trail in 2024, he vowed that if he joined Trump’s team, he would “ban the worst agricultural chemicals.”

I have some bad news for the voters who actually believed he'd follow through on this.

About a year later, in November 2025, the Republican administration advanced a plan to approve agricultural pesticides containing “forever chemicals” as an active ingredient, despite concerns raised by some scientists and environmental activists. Kennedy, in his capacity as Trump’s health and human services secretary, bit his tongue.

This year, the underlying dynamic has reached a new level. The New York Times reported:

President Trump issued an executive order late Wednesday aimed at spurring the domestic production of glyphosate, a widely used weedkiller that has figured in health lawsuits.

The move immediately set off alarms among supporters of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s ‘Make America Healthy Again’ movement, and appeared to put Mr. Kennedy in an awkward position.

As the report explains, glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, which has been the target of tens of thousands of lawsuits that claim it causes non-Hodgkin lymphoma......

This has been an ongoing issue for months. In June, MS NOW’s Catherine Rampell wrote a memorable Washington Post column along these lines, noting that Kennedy’s MAHA agenda is rooted in part in the idea that Americans’ health would greatly improve through better nutrition and exposure to fewer environmental toxins.

Kennedy, Rampell added, is nevertheless playing a leading role in an administration that’s “expanding use of environmental toxins.”

If Kennedy and Team Trump wanted to admit that the MAHA agenda was largely focused on undermining vaccines, it would be impolitic, but it would also be far closer to the truth.
