This discussion thread was locked by EarlG (a host of the General Discussion forum).
In the past two days, I've seen several videos posted where a known pundit's identity has be co-opted by someone using AI to make absurdly false claims. It's a little scary how real these can look and how much misinformation they can be spreading.
A lot of these are tagged by YouTube as having synthetic content. Despite this, people are still responding to them as if they are real.
I tried to do an alert on one, but none of the categories directly apply.
I think we need to add and AI and/or misinformation alert so that we can get on top of this. There's going to be a flood of AI-driven misinformation as we approach the '26 election. Let's try to keep this site clean of that.

(8,199 posts)If the fact finders in the thread point out the truth and the OP is not taken down, which happens quite frequently with a couple of posters for some reason, said poster should be sanctioned in some fashion.
Social media lies are one of the reasons Trump got elected, prove me wrong. Lets not play that game

(12,028 posts)Those should be easy.
A lot of them make absurd claims that just don't hold water, which would fall under "misinformation". Not to hard to spot.
But the rest could be in a grey area.

(54,673 posts)They claim to be based on real research, and they are, but the fictional or extrapolated parts are like one sees in fiction novels based on time periods. Fewer and weaker disclaimers. Ditto on videos co-opting prominent experts in their fields, the only clues being the wobbling heads and repeats of the same gestures. Plus decades old books or material narrated by seemingly the true author but clipped to fit modern contemporary facts. Ad revenue is likely being paid on all this nonsense. AI Slop should have its wings clipped pronto!

(129,952 posts)At least we should caution people to look carefully at any source, especially YouTube, for indications that the material is AI before posting. YouTube in particular is just lousy with AI slop lately. Voices and likenesses can be copied and morphed into a production that looks pretty real but is completely phony. We all have to be more discerning before pouncing on something that satisfies our confirmation bias.
