A new survey shows a notable number of Americans support secession from US. Where does N.J. stand?

By Rachel Cohen | NJ.com

A new survey just revealed that roughly one in five Americans want their state to secede from the United States.

According to a YouGov survey of 26,590 U.S. adults, 18% of respondents said they would support their state breaking away from the rest of the country. The figure is a slight decrease from the one in four Americans who said the same in early 2024, when former President Joe Biden was in office.

The survey, released Wednesday, found that Democrats were more likely to support a separation compared to Republicans by an overall 22% to 14% margin. Democrats who live in a state that voted for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election were also more likely to support secession, with 28% in favor, compared to 17% in states that picked President Donald Trump.

Larger and more populated states — such as California and Texas — have a higher probability of backing secession, according to the survey. In New Jersey, 17% of residents are in favor of withdrawing from the United States, falling around the average of all states.

We don’t need to split up, we need to organize and pick strong leadership to right all these wrongs both here and restore our treaties and reputation abroad.
