NASHVILLE (WMC) - State lawmakers have advanced a bill that, if passed, would make Tennessee the first state to charge those with outstanding deportation orders, even if they are just driving through.
House Bill 1704/Senate Bill 1779, also known as the Illegal to be Illegal bill, is sponsored by Senator Jack Johnson (R-Franklin) and Representative William Lamberth (R-Portland). It was crafted with input from the Trump administration.
It breezed through a House subcommittee Wednesday on a 6-2 party-line vote.
As introduced, the Illegal to be Illegal bill would make it a Class A misdemeanor for any undocumented immigrant with a final deportation order to stay in, enter, or attempt to enter Tennessee.
