CA-11: What Wiener's (D) early money edge means -- and doesn't -- in Congress race

State Sen. Scott Wiener’s massive early edge in fundraising edge in the race to succeed U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi as San Francisco’s representative in the U.S. House of Representatives could give him a significant leg up over his two leading opponents ahead of the June primary and the general election in November.

But political consultants who spoke with The Examiner cautioned that money alone does not guarantee success at the ballot box.

California political history is littered with prominent wealthy people who lost elections: former eBay CEO Meg Whitman and businessman Al Checci, who ran for governor; former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorentina and businessman Michael Huffington, who ran for U.S. Senate; and developer Rick Caruso, who ran for mayor of Los Angeles.

“Candidates can connect with voters without having buckets of money,” Bay Area political consultant Jason Overman said. “With a strong grassroots campaign, you can absolutely win.”
