Virginia governor orders end to state agency partnerships with ICE
State agencies in Virginia will no longer enter cooperation agreements with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to an executive order from Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D).
In a brief press conference Wednesday, Spanberger said the order was about maintaining public trust in state law enforcement.
Here in the commonwealth, we want to make sure were making a clear line in the sand about what is expected of our law enforcement officials, Spanberger said.
The governor previously repealed requirements for Virginia law enforcement officials to enter into Section 287(g) agreements with ICE officers.
Also called the Immigration and Nationality Act, this law allows ICE to deputize state officials to perform the duties of immigration agents.
Currently, 39 other states have agreements under this Act, according to an ICE report. However, several states are considering ending these partnership requirements. Marylands General Assembly passed a law this week to ban 287(g) agreements. Legislatures in Hawaii, New Mexico and New York are also considering bans.
