Majority of Americans Say Economy Worse Off Under Trump Than Biden

The late‑January survey—conducted online January 28–29, 2026, among 2,000 registered voters by The Harris Poll and HarrisX—shows 53 percent of voters believe the economy is worse today than it was under Biden, while 47 percent say it is better, a three‑point slide for Trump since December.

With a margin of error of plus or minus 1.99 percentage points, the shift is subtle but statistically meaningful, hinting at a gradual cooling of the optimism that marked Trump’s first months back in office.

That number thinks it's better?
That number doesn't reflect the cult. It's saying 1 in 6 Americans not brainwashed think the economy is better. In what way?
Because gas is cheap?
But, unemployment is up, inflation isn't better, GDP growth isn't better, deficits are up, and the value of the dollar is down.
I question the quality of this poll, because just 15 months ago too many Americans voted for a fraud because grocery prices were too high. And nothing I'm that regard is better.

I apologize for this non sequitur.

I live in the reddest part of Alabama. They just needed something to say that wasn't overt racism.

They don't care now. They don't even care about the shooting protestors and jailing journalists. They think it will pass them. Yes, they are that dumb.

For the 30% of the public who are full-on cult members, I buy your statement.
But, swing voters have historically voted their pocketbooks.
For those people $3.30 gas and $8 a dozen eggs did have leverage.
Also, we know (from numerous other polls) that independent voters are not in step with the cruel & aggressive immigration purge and are not happy about prices staying behind despite the empty promises.
This poll is inconsistent with both reality & other job approval polls.
It's that 17% outside the cult I'm questioning.

And that's what that 47% said.
That's what is not making sense.
Stocks were way up under Biden. In his last year in office, the S&P went up 25.35%. It's up 15.1% in the first year of Trump 2.0.
It went up 54% under Biden and he took over while COVID was still squeezing things. It was 49% in the last 3 years.
So even people with their eyes on their 401k aren't seeing better than the prior 3 years.
I think the poll is flawed.

It looks like a lot of those people are going through a painful learning experience. They were warned by Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and other Democrats and people of good will that this would happen and they chose to blow off the warnings. They either chose not to vote or swallowed the swill from Faux Noise, Gnus Spax and other right-wing propaganda sources and voted for Republicans and the scamster at the top of the Republican Party ticket. A few even chose to punish Democrats for not being ethically or ideologically pure enough by voting GOP.

I admit that I have little sympathy for them, especially for the latter group. I hope they’re thinking about their dead and starving friends and relatives in Gaza and elsewhere and thinking about what happened since 01/20/2025. IMO they deserve to feel guilty.

I don’t have much compassion for habitual Republican voters either. The wealthy among them may be doing all right, but they’re a minority of the Republican Party block. As for the rest, they knew they were voting for a crook and a liar, a man who thought of himself first and who was indifferent or even gleeful about the suffering he’s causing.

We warned them. They blew us off. They’re finding out.

The burned hand teaches best. Yeah, it’s callous to say that, but a lot of my illusions were shattered in 2024.

The Democratic candidate focused on economic relief, working-class concerns, and public services, and targeting suburban and working-class voters who feel disconnected from flawed GOP messaging. This localized, issue-focused campaign blasted through party lines.

GOP will have a long, hot summer to wallow.
