'Most Dangerous Attack on Voting Rights Ever'? New GOP Election Bill Sparks Dire Warnings

‘Most Dangerous Attack on Voting Rights Ever’? New GOP Election Bill Sparks Dire Warnings - Common Dreams “Make no mistake,” said one critic of the MEGA Act, “this egregious power grab is about suppressing turnout, silencing voters, and ensuring minority rule.”

The Republican chairman of the House committee that oversees federal elections introduced legislation on Thursday that one analyst characterized as possibly “the most dangerous attack on voting rights ever” put forth in the US Congress.

Led by Rep. Bryan Steil (R-Wis.), chair of the House Administration Committee, the Make Elections Great Again (MEGA) Act would ban ranked-choice voting and universal mail-in ballots in federal elections, prohibit states from accepting mailed ballots that arrive after Election Day, enable large-scale voter purges, and institute photo ID requirements.

The bill was endorsed by right-wing organizations including the Election Integrity Network, an organization that—in the words of the New York Times—“has done more than any other group to take [Donald Trump’s] falsehoods about corruption in the democratic system and turn them into action.” The Election Integrity Network has received funding from Citizens for Renewing America, a group founded by White House budget director and Project 2025 architect Russell Vought.

“There is not a shred of evidence of widespread voter fraud in the United States. Courts, audits, and election officials from both parties have repeatedly proved that,” said Tiffany Muller [president of the End Citizens United Action Fund]. “Yet House Republicans, in their never-ending quest to stay in power, have once again chosen lies over facts to justify making it harder for eligible Americans to vote.”

While the SAVE Act focuses almost exclusively on requiring voters to produce documentary proof of citizenship when registering, the MEGA Act is far more sweeping. It would:

Impose a strict photo ID requirement to vote,
create a centralized voter surveillance system in every state,
mandate constant voter roll purges, gutting the “Motor Voter” law that expanded access to voter registration,
bar states from counting ballots that arrive after Election Day,
ban universal mail voting, in which states mail a ballot to all registered voters,
bar the federal funding for voter registration by outside groups,
and unleash lawsuits against election officials — all at once.
The provision requiring photo ID states that election officials “may not provide a ballot for an election for Federal office to an individual who desires to vote in person unless the individual presents to the official a valid physical photo identification,” according to the bill text.

The bill also aggressively targets voter registration itself. It would require states to demand documentary proof of U.S. citizenship before registering anyone to vote in federal elections and to repeatedly re-check the eligibility of people who are already registered.

Trump's underhanded MAGA accomplices, enablers, and co-conspirators have been UP to.

NOT to mention that there very well may be challenges to those "valid" photo id's. There is also the potential problem associated with birth certificates as required proof of citizenship when registering, esp. for married women whose last name probably won't match the name on the birth certificate.

But hey, no problem for MAGAS because many of them don't think women should have the right to vote anyway. Including Hegseth, and Ann Coulter, and well as some MAGA pastors, and A BUNCH MORE - just as a refresher as to how SICK some of them are.

Hegseth reposts video on social media featuring pastors saying women shouldn’t be allowed to vote - AP

And even after all of that, Trump's MAGAs have put into place, in many locations, the mechanisms/laws that would allow THEM to refuse to certify votes THEY don't like.
