Virginia Democrats appeal ruling on redistricting amendment
Virginia Democrats on Wednesday appealed a judges ruling that blocks a redistricting amendment from going before voters this spring as they look to pick up House seats ahead of the midterms.
Today, we followed through on our commitment to appeal the Tazewell ruling, top Virginia Democratic legislative leaders said in a joint statement. This decision was legally flawed, unprecedented, and the product of court-shopping designed to block Virginians from voting on their own Constitution.
We remain confident we will prevail, and we will continue moving forward to put this question directly to the voters where it belongs, they added.
A local county circuit court judge ruled on Tuesday that Virginia Democrats would not be allowed to move forward with the redistricting amendment planned to go before voters in April. If approved, the amendment would give lawmakers permission to temporarily redraw the Old Dominions congressional lines in time for the midterms.
