GOP centrists choose nuclear option in fight with Mike Johnson over Obamacare

Source-https://www.cnn.com/2025/12/17/politics/obamacare-subsidies-discharge-petition-johnson-healthcare

Snip-"Those four GOP centrists — New York Rep. Mike Lawler and Pennsylvania Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, Ryan Mackenzie and Rob Bresnahan — have officially opted for what they have been describing as the nuclear option.

By signing onto Democrats’ procedural maneuver to force a floor vote on their proposed three-year extension of enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries now has the 218 signatures needed guarantee a vote under discharge petition rules. That floor vote cannot be forced until January, however, under those same rules."

1. It'll pass, and it'll probably get a lot of votes from vulnerable republicans.

Voting no would be a political death sentence for them.

He knows he’s toast if thousands in Bucks County lose their healthcare. Every once in a while he does the right thing. Still won’t vote for him.

This past November election was nothing short of a political earthquake here in Bucks County, PA.

They're clearly scared. Several suburbs and towns in WNY voted for and helped Democrats get elected to local offices, many of which have historically gone to the Republicans in November.

the Senate will follow. Many rural hospitals are hurting, and a lot are closing. The hospitals remaining opened are overwhelmed in our area.

Plus all the individuals who need them
to get affordable insurance. Hopefully if it passes both House and Senate tsf will sign and not veto it.

What is going to happen to 2026 rates?

If they are set without the extension, they will still be unaffordable.

I think there will be chaos in the short term. Then the Republicans will retreat from the cliff while telling a lot of lies about Democrats. A lot of voters will continue to be fooled.

the enhanced subsidies.

There’s probably a window of 30-90 days before premiums are actually due, but any sort of late change would be an absolute mess.

Despite all their performative outrage, he said exactly 0 of them had signed on to the Dem discharge petition.

But it looks like these 4 chose their own political survival over loyalty to Trump.
