Specifically, New York City, RW talk radio. A host, whom I won't name b/c he doesn't deserve publicity, triple-downed on TSF's Truth Social Post on the murders of Rob and Michele Reiner. Defending what Trump said about Rob Reiner because Rob Reiner criticized his friend Trump. And such a coward: he didn't take phone calls.
His station also is cowardly. A constant disclaimer that the views of the hosts don't reflect the views of the owner and the advertisers to the station. Bullshit! The owner is losing money but keeps hosts like this precisely because they advance HIS political views. And the owner is regularly begging for advertisers but no bites. No business, law firm, etc. wants to have its goodwill compromised by abhorrent views like the one I cited.
I thought Rush was loathsome. I thought nobody could go lower than Glenn Beck. (A radio rival of Beck, Bruce Kelly,, during Beck's stint at Phoenix station Y-95, saw the ugly side of the radio host's personality in "one of the cruelest events in the history of morning radio," writes Zaitchik. A couple of days after Kelly's wife had a miscarriage, Beck called her live on air to ask if it was true. When she said yes, he joked how Kelly "can't do anything right he can't even have a baby." https://theweek.com/articles/493667/glenn-becks-prefame-enemy-list)
Yes, I understand that guys like these without a leash and a microphone try to be outrageous just to get people to listen and to talk about them all day. It gets attention and ratings.
But they pollute the airwaves with their views that don't reflect any decency, empathy, thought.
I call them the children of Father Coughlin.

(4,839 posts)But this has been going on way too long. Rush may have been the most popular but he was not alone. Shame on bars and fire station common rooms who air this poison day after day after day. I know other places air it 24/7 also but those are the two I have personally seen.

(4,839 posts)I do not watch TV at home. A few months ago, I sat at a bar to drink a little Canadian Club. The TV was turned to the Food Channel, which I find to be obnoxious in its own right. Gordon Ramsey was mentoring children in that particular episode.
Once, I heard an otherwise intelligent woman say that Faux plays at her home all day. Her husband must have brainwashed her.
Those of the firefighters who vote Democratic probably spend little time in that common area of the firehouse. I wish that I could see signs of the indoctrination ebbing, but I do not.

(6,971 posts)since the 1980s. When we had Air America programs Mitt Romney had the stations bought up and they took off all the programs that leaned left. Take over the media was the plan all along.

(1,502 posts)Even before the rise of Limbaugh, conservative radio was mainly directed at getting its audience to be mad at their own neighbors, and once he came along, it became outright hate propaganda, which it has continued to be ever since. The same kind of propaganda which in the past has led to genocides, combining fearmongering with slander.

(76,421 posts)Getting people like you upset and angry is one of the chief goals of right wing radio,
T. V. and social media sites. A lot of their content comes from Russias, Storm 15-16
whose goal is to cause social divisions.
Of course it is wrong and filled with lies but that is by design.
