Back in the 60s when I was about 10 years old some country nationalized the oil in their country. I remember thinking, though clearly I was just repeating the political and media framing of the situation, why are they stealing OUR oil? I’ve grown up since then and somewhere along the way I realized that it never was OUR oil they were stealing but it was Texaco’s or Exxon’s or BPs oil which of course had been stolen before.

Going back decades, the Venezuelan people were bilked out of the natural resources of their own country until the people rightfully took it back and kicked out the criminal oligarchs that stole from them in the first place. But that actually started in 1976 with President Perez, then President Chavez further solidified government control, with Maduro finalizing full government control of all oil fields and production.
Just for the record, it was the big oil companies, like the ones Trump met with in the White House earlier this year, who lost ownership of the oil fields.
I wonder what they promised Trump in return for getting those holdings back?
