NY-17: GOP Rep. Lawler says it would be 'wrong' for Trump to reclassify marijuana

Republican Rep. Mike Lawler (N.Y.) said Monday that President Trump changing marijuana’s classification would be ill-advised.

“I think rescheduling marijuana is wrong. The fact is, marijuana is a gateway drug. Most of the people who end up using hard substances start out on marijuana,” Lawler told host Blake Burman on NewsNation’s “The Hill.”

The president said Monday that he is “considering” reclassifying cannabis as a less dangerous drug. The Biden administration began efforts to reclassify marijuana as a Schedule III drug last year but did not complete the process before former President Biden left office.

Lawler also noted that the concentration of THC, the main psychoactive in marijuana, has increased “significantly” in recent decades.

I am 72.

At what age am I going to turn to hard drugs ???

I have been smoking cannabis for 53 years.

I lost interest and taste for drinking at around 50.

Again, I ask when am I turning to hard drugs ???

I am so sick of the lies and bullshit.

I started using cannabis in high school, smoking daily until age 43, when I stopped abruptly due to career demands. I didn’t turn to alcohol to fill any perceived gaps in my life. I did resume cannabis 3 years ago, and while the part about higher levels of THC is true, it’s also awesome.

I’d classify ethyl alcohol as a more dangerous ‘gateway drug’ than THC. Which one lowers inhibition to the point that someone under the influence would think ingesting a dangerous and/or habit-forming substance is a good idea?
