Florida Is Ground Zero for Coming Obamacare Storm

Florida's Affordable Care Act (ACA) monthly costs are rising significantly for 2026, primarily because enhanced federal subsidies, which made plans affordable, are expiring at the end of 2025. Many Floridians are seeing their premiums nearly double or even triple, with some facing jumps from hundreds to over a thousand dollars monthly, leading to tough choices about dropping coverage or downgrading plans, as insurers requested average rate hikes around 34%.
Why Costs Are Rising
Subsidy Expiration: Key federal subsidies from the American Rescue Plan (ARP) and Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) are ending, meaning less government help to pay premiums for many middle-income individuals and families.
Average Rate Hikes: Insurers proposed or received approval for significant rate increases, with estimates around 34% for Florida.
Impact on Policyholders:
Doubled Premiums: Some individuals are seeing their costs go from $600-$700 to over $1,000 monthly.
Massive Jumps: A family could see monthly costs rise from under $400 to over $800, while individuals could jump from under $40 to over $170.
No Action, Higher Costs: Without Congressional action to extend subsidies, these higher rates take effect in 2026.
