What are we going to tell the grandchildren?
I have been watching clips of Trump's dribbling comments, like when he described groceries as if it was a word that was last used in the 18th century. And I thought to myself, how in the hell can anyone not see he's lost the plot? The man is not in any way sharp in his mind. He's babbling.
And then it came to me. Some day in the future, these clips will be all that our descendants will have to judge this time period. And they're going to ask, how is it possible that no one saw that the president's thought processes were not up to the task of running a country of 340 million people, which also had the capability of impacting negatively on the rest of the world?
And then it came to me. There is a combination of reasons. It's not because the Republicans in Congress fear him. It's because his base supporters are as crazy as he is and will support him even if he burns this country to the ground; but also, because what he's doing is still serving a purpose to many of the elite Republicans. And we may not yet fully understand the whole story behind this second layer of people for a while longer.
