Hero bystander who tackled gunman in incredible footage identified

By Josefine Ganko
Updated December 15, 2025 — 12.26am, first published December 14, 2025 — 9.14pm

A hero bystander who wrestled a rifle off an alleged gunman in a moment of bravery that may have saved lives has been identified as 43-year-old father of two Ahmed el Ahmed.

In an incredible act of courage, Ahmed placed himself in the line of fire to take a rifle from the shooter, and was later hit by at least two bullets himself.

Ahmed’s cousin, identified only as Mustafa, spoke to Seven News outside St George Hospital, where he is undergoing surgery. Mustafa confirmed to Seven that Ahmed had taken on the gunman and later sustained bullet wounds to his upper arm and his hand.

“He’s in hospital, and we don’t know exactly what’s going on inside,” Mustafa said.

This is the most effective way to control a shooter. May all good get bestowed on this hero

End the threat permanently when you have the chance. Always assume they have another weapon.

Sure, potential legal issues that might come up, but I'll take my chances with a jury.

In hindsight, the hero should have forced the terrorist to lie down. If he had shot him while he was running back to his friend, he would be vilified endlessly. Did the terrorist kill anyone else after he rearmed himself?

I'm shooting the guy the second I have the gun in my hand.

I understand it's complex, but he's shooting, there's another shooter at an elevated position and he's retreating back to them.....to me

it's obvious that he has to be neutralized.

Of course there is a lot that's not clear from the video. It's grainy and I can't even see what type of weapon he's got. It might be a bolt action rifle that the man doesn't know how to put a new round into. He might have pulled the trigger and it didn't fire.

If you're from Australia.

Most folk here don't think in terms of shooting back simply because this is a rare happening. We don't live with the constant threat of gun violence and therefore are not drilled and schooled in shooting responses.

From a concerned friend? Somehow I don't think Australia will ever regress to that extent. We are far more united against guns in our society and I think we'll stay that way.

Note; There were no assault-type rifles. The weapons were legal and bought over a period of many years. It's looking to me like this could have been planned a long time ago but the shooter/s were careful not to raise any alarms about the collection of weapons. All weapons registered; the owner a member of a gun club as one must be before purchasing a weapon.

We have too much invested in our society to throw up our hands and relent to bullies.

18 people were injured in a shooting in Sydney in October.

And, given the high incidence of firearms being stolen in AU, along with advacements in 3d printing technology capable of making homemade weapons....do you really think that any gun control laws are going to be able to prevent a shooting if someone is motivated enough to carry one out?

You can see it in the video, his right arm dropped and he puts the gun down then.
No matter what, he gave the police precious seconds to regroup.

and I'm not criticizing him. I'm just pointing out that if anyone ever finds themselves in a similar situation, take advantage of the moment you have the upper hand.

He was shot by the man on the elevated position. If he shoots the shooter he disarmed immediately and gets to cover, he might not have been shot at all. Holding the gun on the man left him exposed.
