The shooter remains at large after the university reversed an earlier alert that said that one person was in custody.
What we know
An active shooter was reported on or near the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, the university’s public safety department said this afternoon.
Multiple people have been shot in the area of the university, Providence police said.
There is no suspect in custody, the university said in an updated alert this afternoon. It had earlier said that one person was in custody.
The university said on its Emergency Information website that the shooter is near the Barus & Holley engineering building. The alert instructed people to lock their doors, silence their phones and stay safe.
The student newspaper, The Brown Daily Herald, reported that an alert and call went out to students about the incident.
