I bought some watercolor paint from Italy. (One little pan of Quin Gold PO49 for you artists.)
The cost was $21.06, shipping was 33.69 and tax 5..01.
The UPS driver rang my bell and told me he needed $34.95 in order to deliver the package.
Checks only.
$94.71

(40,570 posts)Along with a little ceramic piggy bank originally from Holland. I had it for awhile before I realized it doesn't have a stopper or any way to get the coins out.
That inspired me to look at the rest of my piggys & I found a second one without a stopper. That one is full & has a lot of bills in it! I managed to pull the ones I could still see out with tweezers, but alas, everything in that little bank is gone for my lifetime, anyway.

(14,992 posts)You just made a smallish pinch pot with a narrow opening so no one could easily remove any of the contents, and tossed it in the fireplace to harden. Lots of times, there would be a marking scratched in to note whose pot it was.
Then you could "bank" savings or a maybe set aside for a dowery whenever you had a spare coin or two to toss in.
You'd "break the bank" when you needed money, then make a new one for any left over.
The Victorians were the ones to turn them too cute to break, until it was time for a kid to leave home for university or a job or marriage.

(8,044 posts)Can you imagine how this will slow down their deliveries? If I wanted to pay with a debit card there was some form that needed to be filled out and, I think, I'd have to go somewhere to pick it up. (When he started to explain I just said I'd go get my checkbook, so I'm not sure of those procedures.)

(13,844 posts)It's a huge open-air market full of some amazing things. She said she wanted to buy things but was limited to what she could put in her luggage because the vendors won't ship anything to the U.S., like they used to, because of the tariffs.

(4,228 posts)After I completed the sale from a seller who was rather falsely
trying to represent that the item was located in LA,
I got a warning from Ebay that 'tariffs' would apply to that sale
I requested to cancel the sale, and the seller complied.
I don't have transportation to go to the post office and pay some tariff fee
to accept my delivery, so...
Formerly, tariffs were exempted from purchases by Americans
which were under $800, but the Trump administration cancelled that rule....
because they want to screw us all down to a $24 purchase....

(4,130 posts)Most of my home is furnished with bargains I've found at estate sales. I bought a state of the art air fryer/dehydrator/roaster/oven for $30. I've bought microwave ovens, vintage Serveware, Corningware, piano keyboards, art, books, dining room sets, patio sets, outdoor grills, art supplies, plants, cleaning products, clothing, shoes, many small appliances, pots and pans, bar ware, stem ware, garden tools, hose reels, jewelry, sofas, tables, bookcases, and a gorgeous 1940s art deco sewing cabinet with a vintage Singer that will likely work another 50 years. I live at a much higher standard of living than I would if I didn't frequent the sales, because I surely couldn't (WOULDN'T) indulge in retail pricing on items I've found at estate sales. I have saved thousands of dollars in my lifetime with this frugal hobby.

(33,056 posts)and went to a special exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Decided I wanted to buy the exhibit book, but didn't want to tote a heavy book in my already heavy luggage all around Scotland for two weeks. Went on the V&A website to order the book and have it shipped, only to discover they were no longer shipping to the US because of tariffs. I ended up shipping the book to the last hotel on my itinerary and stuffed the book into my big suitcase to fly home with me.

(3,230 posts)... has any reporter had the cojones to press Trump on how the government collects revenue from tariffs, and where the hell the money goes?
Anyone with the brains of a potted plant knows that Trump is a pathological liar, and not especially bright. He'll just scream insults at anyone who challenges him, but that shouldn't stop a brave reporter. Get the question out there, ram it down his throat, and make his minions squirm to spin it.
The evidence of his treason is overwhelming, so why isn't anyone calling him on it? I mean, he claims that anyone who dares to question him is guilty of treason in his diseased mind, so throw it back in his face.
Christ, I hate that evil sonofabitch. I'm well into my 79th circumnavigation of Old Sol, and never did I dream it possible that such a grotesquely incompetent psychopath would make it to the Oval Office. But then, he had help, didn't he. Fuckin' Republicans.
