authoritarian-minded upper classes who’d been hostile to the ideas of egalitarianism or democracy for decades before Sam Zemurray bought his first crate of bananas and brought it back to the US for resale. I do not justify or excuse the actions of the United Fruit Company, but a lot of those countries were also fertile ground for what they started, even without the US Marine Corps.

As for a lot of MAGA/Republican states here in the US, more than a few had been dominated economically and politically by one large corporation or another, and the guys on top deftly used racism as a political tool for years.

Actually, it is possible to fruit bananas as far north as hardiness zone 8a by protecting the pseudostem (trunk) over the winter.
