One can of Diet Coke per day could have irreversible damage on 1 organ
A new study has revealed that consuming even moderate amounts of artificially sweetened drinks can increase the risk of liver disease

You might want to think twice before reaching for that Coca-Cola or Diet Coke, regardless of its size. A recent study has found that even moderate consumption of artificially sweetened and sugary drinks is linked to an increased risk of liver disease.
According to research presented at the 2025 United European Gastroenterology Week conference in Berlin last month, consuming just 9 ounces of a sugary drink daily can increase the risk of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver (MASLD) disease by 50%. Meanwhile, the same amount of a single diet soda could boost the risk by 60%.
"Our study shows that (low- or non-sugar-sweetened beverages) were actually linked to a higher risk of MASLD, even at modest intake levels such as a single can per day," said Lihe Liu, the lead author of the study and a graduate student in the Department of Gastroenterology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Suzhou, China.
"The safest approach is to limit both sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened drinks. Water remains the best choice as it removes the metabolic burden and prevents fat accumulation in the liver, whilst hydrating the body," the author added.
What is MASLD?
Previously known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, MASLD is a type of chronic liver disease characterized by excessive fat build-up in the liver. It's the most common form of liver disease worldwide and can lead to severe liver scarring.
The Cleveland Clinic points out that MASLD develops over several years, and it's possible to have the condition without experiencing symptoms.
