South Carolinas measles outbreak is accelerating in the wake of Thanksgiving travel and a lack of vaccinations, an epidemiologist for the states Department of Public Health (DPH) warned Wednesday, after authorities traced a sizable outbreak to a church in the states northwest.
Of the 111 measles cases recorded in that area, known as the Upstate region, 105 involved people who were unvaccinated while three involved those who were partially vaccinated, state epidemiologist Linda Bell said at a news briefing. At least 254 people had been placed in quarantine as of Tuesday, 16 of whom are in isolation, the DPH said in a news release.
Bell said that 27 new cases had been reported since Friday, bringing the total reported to the DPH this year to 114. Accelerating is an accurate term. That is a spike in cases we are concerned about, she said in response to a question from a reporter, adding that South Carolina has lower than hoped for vaccination coverage.
At least 16 of those new cases were traced back to a recent outbreak at the Way of Truth Church in Inman, which Bell said has since been very helpful in cooperating with the health departments recommendations.

(9,043 posts)Let me guess: a fundamentalist science rejecting minister and congregation.
It must suck to be a child living in the midst of so much dangerous childishness.
Let's hope this doesn't get any worse, but I don't hold out much hope.

Our mission is to spread the news of Christ and to nurture spiritual growth in the church, firmly on Gods Word.
We adhere to conservative Christian values and pay special attention to spiritual growth through biblical teachings.

(9,043 posts)It sounds like it's a largely immigrant congegation. I wonder then at the intersection between their identity as immigrants and the anti-vaccine bias--assuming that's what's happening here. Is it then an actual anti-vaccine issue, or rather an inability to plug into needed health services because of a language/ethnicity barrier? If it's the latter, then I'd tbink the problem comes from the state public health people not doing sufficient outreach to this community.
Whatever the case, I hope they get this under control before it gets worse, and that anyine else in that congregation not vaccinated will get the shots, and soon.
Thanks for the info, and best wishes.
